State of Law: Iraq government needs to be scaled down
June 02, 2011 The State of Law Coalition affirmed on Wednesday that Iraq’s government needs to be scaled down.
The national strategic policy council will weigh down the government, the State of Law said. The Coalition praised Vice President Adel Abdul Mehdi for resigning.
“The government needs to be scaled down especially that there are unneeded institutions that have been integrated in the government structure due to apportionments”, MP Hassan Al Sunaid told Alsumarianews.
The present government led by Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki which was ratified by the Parliament on December 21 consists of 43 ministries in addition to the Prime Minister and three deputy prime ministers.
The national strategic policy council will weigh down the government, Al Sunaid added noting that the council needs directors and security guards and requires a yearly budget, etc…
Rows between the State of Law Coalition and Al Iraqiya are based on certain items of Arbil agreement including the national strategic policy council.
Rows are mainly centered on the mechanism to appoint head of the council. Al Iraqiya calls to appoint head of the council through the Parliament while the State of Law wants the appointment to be decided within the national strategic council’s committee. Both parties vary as well on the chairman’s authorities and title whether Chairman or Secretary General.
“Iraqi Vice President Adel Abdul Mehdi has resigned driven by national motives”, Al Sunaid said.
“Abdul Mehdi notified the National Alliance about his resignation in an official letter”, he added noting however that Abdul Mehdi will pursue his political role whether inside or outside the government.
