VP Allawi: national reconciliation unlikely

Vice President of Iraq, Ayad Allawi.
BAGHDAD, Iraq — National reconciliation is beyond Iraqis reach for now, Iraqi Vice President Ayad Allawi claimed Friday. In a statement, Allawi said national reconciliation between different Iraqi factions seems elusive. “Iraq lacks basic requirements to achieve military and political success. National reconciliation is not likely to happen while Iraqis militarily and politically remain fragmented,” he said. Allawi also said there should be cooperation with the US-led coalition to defeat the Islamic State. “Iraqi military forces and the US-led coalition are tangibly in discord in fighting ISIS,” he said. According to Allawi, the Shiite militia movement known as the Hashd al-Shaabi, or the Popular Mobilization Units (PMUs), are poorly trained and do not follow the Iraqi government’s commands. “New militia groups may rise out of this situation if it lasts long,” he warned.
