On Friday, the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture submitted a proposal to develop and increase agricultural production in the country by exploiting the lands adjacent to the public estuary.
The head of the committee, Thaer Makheeb, said in an interview with the “National News Center” that “there is a proposal on the table of the Agriculture Committee to exploit the saline non-agricultural lands adjacent to the two sides of the general mouth of the Third River and to plant them with salinity-resistant seeds that we bring from abroad to increase production.”
He added, "These lands are estimated in very large areas and are not cultivated, and we may work to exploit them by planting salt-resistant Australian seeds in order to increase local production."
He pointed out that "the water file is one of the biggest issues that hinder the agricultural sector, which calls for the development of new strategies by the government and the concerned authorities to provide as much water as possible during the next season."
