The Iraqi oil ministry revealed on Sunday that there are efforts to build a fleet of oil tankers to restore the vital role of the national carrier in the global energy markets, while confirming its support for the purchase of modern tankers.
The oil minister, hayan Abdul Ghani, during his visit to the Iraqi Oil Tanker Company in Basra province, said in a statement received by Baghdad today, that
"the ministry is keen to support and support the work of the Iraqi Oil Tanker Company and resume its activity in the maritime transportation of crude oil and not limit it to transporting limited quantities of oil products. The minister stressed,
"work to restore the vital role of the national carrier in the global energy markets, and enhance its role and historical position that it enjoyed when it was cruising the seas and transporting Iraqi oil in the seventies and Eighties of the last century to Europe, Asia and Latin America by more than 2 million barrels. He pointed out that
"the need to resume work to transport Iraqi crude oil by strengthening the company with a fleet of modern tankers with large loads as it was previously in Iraq before the absurd Wars destroyed it," pointing out that
"the ministry had attempts to restore the company's work after 2003, but the scale of challenges and obstacles was great and was able to own some tankers for transporting oil products. Abdul Ghani added that
"the ministry provides its great support for the purchase of modern tankers to transport crude oil and seek to rebuild and rehabilitate the old tankers, and that the company has a globally accredited tanker fleet, and the company's management is choosing between going to buy alone or in cooperation with internationally accredited companies".
For his part, Ali Qais, the company's general manager, presented, according to the statement,
"a summary of the company's activities, which was established in 1972, where the company was able to achieve advanced and important steps in the field of work, and is keen to develop a plan to increase the number of tankers of various capacities and sizes," noting that
"the company had a fleet of more than 24 large tankers destroyed as a result of wars.
"A new oil tanker will be launched early next year to join the current naval fleet," the director general revealed.
