Tensions among the Iraqi political blocs have heightened after the arrest warrant was issued for Vice president Tariq al-Hashimi on charges of involvement in acts of terrorism against government officials.
The arrest warrant was issued on December 19 after Hashemi's bodyguards confessed that they had assassinated several Iraqi officials and army generals over the past years on his order.
However, Tariq al-Hashemi has denied charges of involvement in the assassination of Iraqi officials.
According to the Iraqi judge Munir Haddad, the decision taken by the Iraqi President is the only viable alternative to the current crisis that could save the country from further unrest.
“His [Jalal Talabani] call to refer the case of Mr. al-Hashimi to the court may very well defuse the ongoing tensions. Any failure to act on his recommendations will plunge the country into a political void,” added Haddad.
The Iraqiya bloc has recently approved the president's invitation for a meeting among all political parties to relieve tensions.
This comes while it is still unclear whether the warring Iraqi factions will keep their promise to accept the invitation of President Talabani to hold talks and find a way out of the crisis.
