Baghdad, June 18 (AKnews) - Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and Minister of Finance should reveal how oil revenues are being spent, the Parliamentary Integrity Committee said today.
Committee member, Alia Nassif, said in a statement that the accounts must be presented to MPs.
“They [MPs] represent the people and so have the right to be informed about what was spent during the first hundred days of this year,” he said.
"Transparency must characterize the financial transactions for all ministries. Indeed, the Ministry of Finance should be top of the list of those to provide detailed accounts of spending mechanisms."
The Iraqi government has revealed that the high oil prices boosted Iraq's oil revenues, reaching $34.1 billion during the first five months of this year, an increase of $ 8.7 billion or 34 per cent from the same period last year.
With the steady rise in Iraqi oil production and exports, government officials say they expect the oil revenues to cover the shortfall in the budget, which is currently $13.4 billion.
