ERBIL - Bulgaria and the Kurdistan region are set to cooperate in the fields of trade, tourism, and agricultural expertise.
The vow comes after the two sides signed a number of agreements and officially opened the Kurdistan-Bulgaria Friendship Association.
The association's trade official Ibrahim Mustafa told a press conference in Erbil: "The goal of the association is to build and develop ties between the Kurdistan region and Bulgaria and to exchange expertise in addition to Bulgaria's assistance for Kurdistan in the fields of tourism, higher education, industry and agriculture.
"Our association was officially licensed a few days ago but we have been working for a few months," he added.
One of the agreements signed between the Bulgarian Higher Education Ministry and the association will see Kurdish students sent to Bulgaria for their postgraduate studies.
"Next year, for the first time, Kurdish students will be admitted to the renowned universities of Bulgaria" Mustafa said.
"Also, we have signed an agreement with the Bulgaria Health Ministry to send Kurdish patients to the country's four top hospitals for cardiac treatment for low costs."
Media official for the association Mohamed Majeed told the conference that Bulgaria is expected to open a consulate in the Kurdistan region early next year to further consolidate relations.
