Baghdad, July 10 (AKnews) – A comprehensive population census must be carried out soon, the Minister of Planning said today.
Ali Shukri, who also heads the Supreme Commission for the Census, told AKnews that the commission has fulfilled all the requirements for the census to be carried out.
"The Commission will submit an application to the cabinet about the need to convince the political partners to accelerate the process of preparing for a census in the near future. It is necessary in order that the Iraqi economy can be developed and strategic plans implemented," he said.
He urged politicians to put aside their squabbling and unite to make the census a reality.
“The Commission will present a detailed study to the presidency of the Ministers Council about the mechanisms for conducting the census and documents necessary to conduct the operation."
The political blocs agreed December 5 to form committees under the auspices of the United Nations in the provinces of Diyala, Salahaddin, Nineveh and Kirkuk to submit reports on the logistics of implementation. However, only Diyala and Salahaddin have submitted their reports.
Iraq hasn’t conducted a nationwide census since 1987. The census conducted in 1997 did not include the three provinces of the Kurdistan region.
The number of Iraqis was 16 million people in 1987, but it is now expected that there are around 30 million people in the country, according to the Central Statistics Agency.
The census was postponed twice in 2007 and 2009 because of the poor security situation and fears that areas of disputed sovereignty would be inflamed by the revealing of their ethnic make-up.
