term will not be re-extended, says MP
26/07/2012 15:55
ERBIL, July 26 (AKnews)- The mission of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) of Iraq is over and its term will not be re-extended, the spokesperson for Kurdistan Blocs Coalition (KBC) said.

The meetings for distributing the shares in the new IHEC board over the Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds continue, said KBC official Muayyad Tayyeb, who is also a member of the committee tasked with naming new IHEC members.

Tayyeb added the shares will be completely determined by Saturday, July 28, when the official term of the current IHEC board will terminate and will not be renewed.

The Kurdish MP added Iraqiya list demands three seats in the new board while the National Alliance (NA) agrees on only two seats for Iraqiya.

He continued currently the commission comprises four NA, two Kurdish, two Iraqiya representatives and a single Turkman deputy.

The disagreement is over the Turkman seat which Iraqiya and NA both demands to be their candidates.

Tayyeb said the committee for electing the new IHEC board has also met with the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) for "consultancy not intervention" over the shares in the board .

The IHEC's term ended April 28 but ten days before the term expiry the Iraqi House of Representatives voted to extend the IHEC's term for three month. In the additional duration the IHEC enjoyed its full authorities.

Current IHEC chief, Faraj Haydari, earlier said that Iraqi House Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi informed him that the House intends to make some amendments to the IHEC law.

He added it is possible that the number of IHEC board members be increased from nine to 15 members.

He also expected his office's term be re-extended but he was not sure about the duration of extension.
