The International Energy Agency released a preview video Friday of a an in-depth report on Iraq’s energy potential and its role in the global mix.
The agency regularly examines individual countries to explore similar issues and decided to take a look at Iraq because of its recent conflict history and its prolific oil and gas reserves, said Fatih Birol, the IEA’s chief economist, speaking in the video.
“Iraq has huge potential of oil and gas and as such it can make a major difference in the global energy system,” Birol said.
“We look what are the implications of Iraq oil production growth for the global oil supply, but we also look at what happens if Iraq production does not grow as much as we would like to see, as much as the Iraqi government would like to see,” Birol added. “What are the implications for these global markets?”
The agency also studied how Iraq’s internal energy system is ironically flawed, he said.
“Today, an Iraqi citizen receives about eight hours of electricity on average, which is, in the middle of this richness of energy, unbelievable,” Birol said.
The full report, Iraq’s Energy Outlook, will be released Tuesday.
