Shafaq News / Secretary of Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Fadhil Mirani confirmed on Wednesday, that the region's President, Massoud Barzani doesn’t look for a position or a job and may surprise everyone to declare his withdrawal from candidacy for the presidency of the region.
“The other party can’t object to the nomination of Barzani as long as it is being done through a legal framework,” The prominent Kurdish leader said in interview to “Al-Sharq al-Awsat” newspaper, briefed by “Shafaq News” on the nomination of Barzani to the next presidential elections.
“It is strange that these parties that want today to convey the election of the President of the Region to the Parliament, are the same that criticized this way in the first elections in 2005, and this is why President Barzani wanted to change the election method to a direct voting”.
He expressed “his vision that electing the president by the people is best because it will allow everyone to deliver cast their votes in electing their president”.
“This method would allow other competitors to participate as happened in 2009 elections,” pointing out that “the election of the President in the parliament would lead to deprive them from the competition”.
About the possibility of making a deal or a political agreement outside the parliament framework along the lines of Erbil Parliament Agreement that ended the ruling problem in Iraq, Mirani said, “We submitted on the opposition to share us in a national united government until elections but they refused."
“The opposition wants to seize power,” Mirani said.
Asked about the opposition accusations to his party to install the rule of the Barzani family on the presidency of the region, Mirani said “First we are not embarrassed from our commitment under the leadership of this family of our party, as they were leaders of the liberation movement and there are family parties in a number of other countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan and elsewhere”.
He stressed that “they have the right to nominate their ministers to the government and we also have the right to nominate the president of the region or the government, as we respect their decisions, they have to respect our choices as long as they do not violate the law”.
On the conflicting positions of PUK on the nomination and the Constitution issue, Mirani said “In fact, after the President Talabani got unwell, we ask for his speedy recovery, I say with full conviction whether in Iraq or within KDP and PUK that we did not know the value of Mam Jalal completely only after his absence from us on a temporary basis”.
