Foreign Minister to take part in EU-Gulf Cooperation Council Ministerial Meeting

On 30 June, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs will take part in the 23rd session of the Joint Council and Ministerial Meeting of the European Union and the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) held in Manama, Bahrain this year.
The ministers will discuss relations between the European Union and the Gulf states, including economic cooperation. Attention will be focused on the Middle East Peace Process, developments in Syria, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Mali and Myanmar, and the fight against global terrorism and piracy. The agenda also includes one of the most important issues for the EU and the GCC, namely, the signing of a free trade agreement.
The Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC), established in 1981, is a regional organisation with 6 members: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The GCC is the EU's biggest trading partner in the Arab world and the fifth largest export market. The Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council was concluded in 1988.
