BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: A Legislature from al-Iraqiya Bloc, led by Iraq’s former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, in a statement on the occasion of the 23rd Anniversary of the end of the eight-year Iraq-Iran War, taking place today (Monday,) has demanded Iran pay compensation to Iraq for its war against Iraq.
“We demand Iran pay compensations for its eight-year war against Iraq, estimated at more than U.S.
$700 billion (b), for the ‘martyrs’ and the infrastructure destroyed because of the war and Iran’s violations against Iraq,” Talal al-Zoba’e told Aswat al-Iraq news agency on Monday.
He said that that “the Iranian side had been the one that launched the war and the United Nations and other International organizations pointed out that Iraq had been willing to achieve peace, but Iran had insisted to continue the war and strike Iraq, thing that forced us to defend ourselves at that period, being one of the basic rights of the Iraqi people.”
“The Iraqi arena had witnessed huge violations by militias, supported by Iran, that killed Iraqis, forced others to desert their home towns and made a lot of women widows; so, we are demanding compensations for that period, along with this second period from Iran, especially for the people killed during the period of the American occupation of Iraq,” Zoba’e said.
The Iraq-Iran War had ended on August 8, 1988, eight years after its breaking out in August, 1980.
