Baghdad, Aug. 9 (AKnews) - The Iraqi parliament approved the journalists protection law on Tuesday after implementing a number of amendments to its articles in response to criticism to from media workers.
The chairman of the Culture and Information Committee Ali al-Shallah said at a news conference in Baghdad with the chairman of the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate that the Iraqi parliament voted with a majority for the law.
"The vote came after the article that defines a journalist as someone who belongs to the journalists syndicate rather than any media institution was amended,” he said.
Voting for the law was postponed more than once and amendments were made to the draft. The journalists syndicate says that politicians have delayed the progress of the bill because they fear that the law will make it easier to reveal cases of corruption.
Muayyid al-Lami, the chairman of Iraqi Journalists Syndicate said: “The Culture and Information Committee in the parliament took into consideration the amendments on the law, and suggestions and observations made by the four committees formed by the syndicate that are the professional, Academic, Legal and Youth Committees, as well as amendments proposed by a number of journalists and academics."
Iraq is classified as one of the most dangerous areas for practicing journalism in the world where about 360 journalists were killed in the country since 2003, according to a number of civil society organizations.
Maisoun Damluji, the spokesman of the Iraqiya list stated that the commission responsible has provided all its amendments to the law which will be submitted for voting
MP Abbas al-Bayati said "the law is important and necessary and must be approved despite some shortcomings in order to provide protection for the families of victim journalists."
"The law will provide more freedom for the press to access information in addition to the right for journalists to protect the anonymity of their sources.”
