Defence Has Taken Measures To Protect Site Of Mubarak Port
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 9: Kuwait’s Ministry of Defense has taken the necessary measures to protect the site allocated for the construction of the Mubarak Al-Kabeer port, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily quoting sources.
Sources explained these are normal security procedures taken by any country prior to the implementation of a project near its borders with other nations. Sources revealed the ministry took land, sea and air security measures to ensure the port is safe before the construction work starts.
Sources added the measures taken included the deployment of military police, as well as the installation of the Amon defense system and an intelligence service. Sources said an air defense detachment, troops from the 6th and 35th brigades, and naval forces have also been dispatched to the island. Sources affirmed the security forces have not detected any security breach in and around the port since their deployment.
Meanwhile, Alam Alyawm daily has obtained information that the Iraqi National Security Council, headed by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki, met Sunday in the presence several senior security officials to deliberate on the alleged plan of the Kuwaiti intelligence system to recruit members of terrorist groups in Iraq to destabilize security in the southern part of the country.
According to Al-Maliki, he informed three Kuwaiti political leaders about the plan when he visited the country in April. He said the brother of former Basra Governor Ismail Mosbeh Al-Wa’eli, who is known as Kuwait’s ‘arm’ in Basra, is in charge of the recruitment process. He is said to have reached an agreement with those who attended the meeting on Sunday on the need to take political and security procedures to abort the plan of the Kuwaiti intelligence.
Violations
In the meantime, sources said the media office of the Iraqi Transportation Ministry has accused Kuwait of committing other violations along the Iraqi navigation borders.
Moreover, Al-Shahed daily has reported that a number of lawmakers have expressed resentment over the Iraqi Hezbollah threats, which they consider a reflection of the security and political problems in Iraq, in addition to the lack of a central system in the country.
MP Saleh Ashour has emphasized the importance of taking serious steps against such threats. He pointed out the Iraqi government’s failure to stop these threats only means it cannot control the parties and groups keen on wreaking havoc in the region. He claimed some Iraqis want to instigate conflicts between Kuwait and Iraq, as well as weaken the government of Al-Maliki through the issuance of provocative statements on the Mubarak Al-Kabeer port project.
MP Hussein Al-Huraiti said the Iraqi Hezbollah has violated international resolutions and agreements; hence, the need for the Kuwaiti government to ask its Iraqi counterpart to clarify the issue and instruct the concerned authorities to take the necessary action against those behind the threats. He also called for the implementation of agreements signed with the USA due to the security situation in Iraq.
MP Mubarak Al-Khurainej asserted Kuwait will not violate any international law if it insists on the construction of the Mubarak Al-Kabeer port. He urged the Kuwaiti security authorities to take more precautions, especially since there are some sleeper cells bent on destabilizing the country.
In a related development, British Ambassador to Kuwait Frank Baker has reaffirmed Kuwait’s right to implement the Mubarak Al-Kabeer port project, since it is a sovereign nation, reports Al-Anba daily.
Speaking at a press conference organized Monday by the British Embassy at the Visa Center, Baker pointed out the provocative statements made by the Iraqi side are illogical.
He disclosed he had earlier discussed the issue with the British ambassador to Baghdad, during which he stressed the need to resolve the conflict through the formation of a joint committee, away from those who want to escalate tension between Kuwait and Iraq.
Hoping Iraq will soon comply with all the decisions issued in 1991 for the good of Kuwait after the invasion, Baker said the embassy has collaborated with the Kuwaiti authorities to address several pending issues like the search for missing Kuwaitis in Iraq, but he declined to divulge details of the collaboration.
On the situation in Syria, Baker revealed he met Deputy Premier and Foreign Affairs Minister Sheikh Dr Mohammed Al-Sabah earlier, and they discussed the stand of Kuwait and other nations in the Gulf on the growing violence in Syria. He confirmed the Security Council will continue deliberating on the issue until Syria overcomes the crisis. He also applauded the deeply-rooted relations between Britain and Kuwait.
