BAGHDAD - morning
Recognized by U.S. forces on Wednesday during the implementation of the two air strikes against militants last June, without the participation of Iraqi forces, in clear violation of the terms of the security agreement signed with Iraq.
The news agency quoted by Reuters, U.S. military spokesman James Buchanan as saying that «the Apache helicopters attack carried out an air strike targeted militants firing rockets at a U.S. base adjacent to the Basra International Airport», he said, adding that «the measure, which was part of one, was in self-defense». He explained that «the second strike and directed towards the two gunmen were planning to blow up roadside bomb targeting a U.S. convoy». The secretary of defense for Leon Panetta, warned during his visit to Iraq last month that his country would take action unilaterally if necessary to deal with the militants backed by Iran, who shot down during June the largest number of deaths among U.S. troops in Iraq since 2008. Buchanan said he believed that «the rule is the same as the threat posed by militias backed by Iran, prepared by the greatest threat to the Iraqi state», as he put it.
