No SOMO office in Erbil, says Kurdish governing body
Kurdistan Region’s Minister of Natural Resources, Ashti Hawrami dismissed reports that Iraq’s state oil regulator was to open an office in Erbil.
Hawrami stated, “Opening a SOMO office in Erbil has not been discussed and news reports that said a decision had been made on that issue, are false.”
According to a report, it has been unveiled that Iraq’s State Organization for Marketing Oil (SOMO) was to open an office in Erbil, the capital of the autonomous Kurdistan Region.
According to the report, the Kurdish authorities had agreed to Baghdad’s proposal on the condition that the Erbil office will be headed by a Kurd and that SOMO would not interfere in the region’s oil exports.
The Kurdish government and Baghdad are in dispute over Erbil’s oil exports. The Kurds reject SOMO’s inference in their oil policies, citing the Iraqi constitution that grants the autonomous region independent development of their natural resources.
