ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraqi Prime Minster Haider al-Abadi has ordered Minster of Oil Adel Abdul Mahdi on an urgent mission to Erbil to discuss oil and budget issues with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), a Rudaw reporter has learned.
The move comes as tension has increased this week between Baghdad and Erbil over the KRG’s oil shipment and the region's share of the national budget. The trip was confirmed by Rudaw's Hevidar Ahmed while covering a meeting Wednesday between Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani and Kurdish members of Iraqi parliament on the budget dispute.
According to Ahmed, Barzani has warned that if Baghdad’s lack of cooperation continues, the KRG will think about economic self-sufficiency.
Arez Abdullah, chairman of the Iraqi parliament's Oil and Gas Committee, told Rudaw the main theme of the Wednesday discussion was how to reach a unified response to the budget issue.
"We have discussed the problems, the cause of the tensions and possible solutions. What has been emphasized during the meeting was that we will speak out with one voice on these issues,” Abdullah said.
Abdullah has added: "Then Oil Minister of Iraq will visit Erbil to solve the problems. We are all agreed on same thing: we will do whatever benefits the people of Kurdistan.”
The back-and-forth budget dispute between Erbil and Baghdad took a sharp turn on Monday when a central government spokesman accused the KRG of failing to send it’s agreed upon amount of oil.
