UN cuts food ration of nearly 1 million Iraqi refugees

NEW YORK—One million Iraqi refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs) will receive less than half of their daily need of food from the United Nations, the organization’s Spokesperson Stephan Dujarric said in a press conference Tuesday.
Citing the latest report from the UN Food Program on the situation in Iraq, Dujarric said, “Our colleagues at the World Food Program (WFP) say that severe shortfall in Iraq has forced to cut down the amount food it provides to close to one million [displaced] people.”
The UN spokesperson said that WFP has to make the most of its limited funds.
“In April, because of resourcing difficulties, WFP began to prioritize available funds for internally displaced people (IDPs) to focus particularly on those most in need,” said Dujarric.
According to the organization's website, some 1.8 million Iraqi IDPs receive food vouchers from the UN's World Food Program.
“We recognize families living outside camps are living in tough conditions, but we had to make this difficult decision to stretch our help for the most vulnerable until we receive more funds,” said WFP Representative in Iraq Jane Pearce.
The WFP operations in Iraq remain severely underfunded as more than 60 percent of its much-needed funds have not been received yet.
“The operation in Iraq is 61 per cent underfunded and requires $78.1 million to continue assisting people until end of year,” said Dujarric.
The WFP added in a press release that due to the most recent influx of refugees, the organization had to “scale up its operations massively, from assisting 240,000 Iraqis displaced by violence to reaching 1.8 million Iraqis,”
