Baghdad is categorically against any outside military intervention in Syria.
In televised comments on Saturday President Jalal Talabani warned that such intervention could have very serious repercussions for the entire region. He also feared that the downfall of President Bashar Assad could put the country into the hands of Islamist radicals.
Mr. Talabani described as “a good solution” the recent initiative by the Arab League envisioning the withdrawal of all army troops from the Syrian cities, the dispatch of an Arab League observer mission and the start of a dialogue between the government and the opposition.
