A financial expert confirmed, on Tuesday, that
Iraq is witnessing a state of sluggishness in the number of governmental and private banks, as
their number has reached (76) governmental and private banks, including (18) Islamic banks and (25) commercial ones,
which is many times greater than what exists in neighboring countries, and
it seems that It has tasks other than the tasks for which it was established to stimulate the economy, suggesting that its numbers be reduced by half.
Professor of International Standards at the University of the Inheritance of the Prophets, Dr. Muhammad Fathallah said in a statement to the news agency Noon, that
"the Iraqi banking system consists of (76) banks, including seven government banks, including one Islamic bank, the Al-Nahrain Islamic Bank, and there are (25) local commercial banks,
As for the private Islamic banks, they are (18) banks, and there are also (16) foreign banks, and
this number seems huge after the year 2003 compared to what exists in neighboring and regional countries,
because most of the Arab, Iraqi, and regional banks may be owned by families, and
those families consider their work in The field of banking is a profession and a resource, and
it also finds good relations with the authorities that have the ability to make economic, financial and political decisions. And Fathallah added,
"There is a slack in the number of banks in Iraq, local, commercial or private, whether Islamic or otherwise, and
their number has reached (43) banks other than the foreign banks, which number (16) banks, which is a large number and
the slack is clear in their numbers and
it seems that they have Tasks other than those for which it was established to revitalize the Iraqi economy.
In contrast, the number of banks in the countries surrounding Iraq includes
five Islamic banks in Kuwait,
four Islamic banks in Jordan and Saudi Arabia, and
three Islamic banks in Syria, while you find the number in
Iraq up to (18) banks, which is A large number compared to the size of the activity of the Iraqi economy, and
the proposed solution to this crisis so that the number of banks is commensurate with the activity of the Iraqi economy and
is consistent with the banking numbers or the size of the banking system in the countries surrounding Iraq that are similar to us in economic activity.
A smaller number than those banks that currently exist, and
let their number be reduced to half, in exchange for these banks opening branches in all governorates to provide their services, meaning that the
number of banks is small and their branches are many, effective and active, and
they provide banking services in all governorates similar to what exists in neighboring and regional countries that It is one of the developing or emerging countries and its economy is better than ours."
