Four advantages and three reservations in the file of “investing in the Iraqi desert”

Today, Friday (October 20, 2023), Member of the House of Representatives, Thaer Al-Jubouri, revealed
three reservations for investing in the “Iraqi desert,” while pointing out
four advantages of the desert.
Al-Jubouri said in an interview with "Baghdad Today",
"Iraq owns vast areas in the desert, especially Muthanna, whose land is
characterized by high fertility, with huge reserves of groundwater suitable for irrigation." He pointed out that
"they can be described as green oil wells that
can create a large economic scope that ensures food security for the country and
helps develop export prospects in the medium term."
Al-Jubouri explained,
“There is intense competition from Arab and foreign companies and investors to invest in the Iraqi desert, especially the south, because all means of success are available,” adding,
“But we have three reservations, the most prominent of which is that the
country does not suffer from a lack of funds or competencies, in addition to the necessity of The
priority for investment is for the people of the country, and that
agricultural activity depends primarily on securing the markets’ needs before thinking about exporting.” He pointed out that
"the Iraqi desert, with all its aspects,
possesses four strategic advantages, the most prominent of which is the
availability of water and its
geographical location, in addition to the fact that it
is very fertile land that
can be transformed into an agricultural cordon to save Iraqi markets from any crises in the issue of crop provision, and
this is what prompts us to give greater advantages to internal investment.".
On (June 17, 2023), the Saudi ambassador to Iraq, Abdulaziz Al-Shammari, confirmed that his country had submitted a request to Iraq to establish projects in the Samawah Desert and was waiting for a response, while
he indicated that there was a willingness to establish projects in all governorates of Iraq. Al-Shammari said in press statements,
“His country provided a loan to Iraq more than 6 years ago, worth one billion and 500 million dollars.”
