Iraq achieves a surplus in a number of industries

June 28, 2024
Baghdad/Iraq Observer

Advisor to the Prime Minister for Industry, Development and Private Sector Affairs, Hamoudi Al-Lami, confirmed that the

government pays great attention to developing the local industry,

pointing to success stories that achieved a surplus in some industries, and that many foreign companies have expressed their desire to invest in Iraq. Al-Lami stated,

“The government has placed supporting the industry at the top of its priorities, as the Prime Minister, Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, is continuously following up on this file.” One form of this support is the advancement of the local product, whose contribution previously did not exceed 4%.”

Al-Lami explained, “There are 66,000 factories in Iraq that have stopped working, while work continues in 33,000 other factories, and the number is increasing with the continuation of government support through continuous steps.” He added,

“We have a large contract to invest in phosphate in Iraq, as well as success stories achieved during the era of the current government, such as achieving a surplus in cement and iron production. We also have 17 iron production factories and there has been progress in the work of brick factories, which currently produce 13 million bricks annually.”

Al-Lami stressed the importance of construction industries, especially since Iraq is about to implement large projects for residential cities, explaining that

the government seeks to cover the need from the local industry.
