It is likely that agricultural sufficiency will be achieved within 3-5 years

Economical 11/05/2024
Baghdad: Hussein Thaghab

The specified period is (3-5) years sufficient to achieve self-sufficiency in agricultural crops, according to specialized economic circles that studied the reality of Iraq and the components available in all regions of Iraq, as

those circles agreed on the possibility of working to raise production capacities to achieve self-sufficiency as a first stage, and then

Heading to the global market in the next stage.

International economist, Muhammad al-Obaidi, believes that

“Iraq is capable of achieving self-sufficiency in foodstuffs within a period of (3-5) years, relying on the country’s own agricultural capabilities.”  Al-Obaidi told “Al-Sabah”:

“We presented an integrated study that depends on the country’s available capabilities of water from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, groundwater and rainwater, according to each region and the water it relies on and the crops suitable for it, as the country requires important strategic crops that are considered the most important pillars.” Food security.

High productivity

Al-Obaidi added that the study included indicators of the country’s need and mechanisms for achieving self-sufficiency within a maximum period of (5) years, indicating that

some of these mechanisms could be achieved within (3) years, as

we focused on all the strategic crops and vegetables that can be grown in Iraq, and where they can be grown. Achieve high productivity.

Growing demand

The economic expert pointed out that the strategic crops that we discussed in the study and the country’s need for them amount to (36) crops, as the country needs annually to cover the growing demand for wheat to more than (7.5) million tons and corn to more than (4) million tons.

And barley to more than (2) million tons, and sunflower to more than (3.4) million tons, in addition to the chickpea crop, of which the need reaches more than (780) thousand tons, and lentils to more than (2.2) million tons..

Fruit crops

As for fruits, Al-Obaidi confirmed that the country’s need for some types of fruit crops, such as oranges, amounts to more than (2) million tons, sour lemons to more than (1.3) million tons, and sweet lemons to more than (870) thousand tons.

As for other fruits, their numbers are: Varies, as we presented the country’s need for vegetables, the most important of which are tomatoes, which exceed (2.5) million tons, eggplants, more than (2) million tons, and as for cucumbers, the need exceeds (1.4) million tons annually.  He said:

Implementation plan

To meet these needs, there must be a program to achieve food security that includes the country’s entire database so that we can calculate the quantities of self-sufficiency and reach its annual target numbers to achieve national food security.

This was accurately included in the study, and the basis for entering the food security program is knowledge. Data to reach the target numbers, as food security is target numbers that must be achieved, so that we have achieved the desired goal of the program’s implementation plan.

Food security

He stated that, according to what we mentioned in the introduction to this study, the national plan to achieve food security consists of target numbers that must be achieved to secure food security for our country, and that

every target number for one of the agricultural and animal wealth items and food industries is considered a duty to achieve because it is a goal and without achieving the goal there is no self-sufficiency. or Food security.

Basic crops

He explained that grain crops are of fundamental importance in human life, and have played an important role in the past. As

it was the pillar on which the world was based in the past and

it still plays the same important role in the present, increasing agricultural production, especially grains, is of interest to many countries of the world.

The most important reasons for this are the problem of food shortages and the increasing demand for these materials as a result of the rapid increase in population. And the inability to meet human needs, as most of the world’s population depends on grains for their food, which is estimated at more than 90% of the world’s total population, as grain crops are among the basic crops for providing food.

Promoting production

Member of the Baghdad Economic Forum, Hadi Hindas, stated that

Iraq has large areas of land suitable for agriculture, in addition to the availability of fresh water and groundwater, and this can create an effective agricultural sector, indicating that

this trend requires high coordination between the public and private sectors to advance production and protect productive agricultural crops. locally. He stressed that the

Ministry of Agriculture and the professional organizations concerned with agricultural affairs have the responsibility to work hard to protect agricultural production at peak production times, noting that

this raises the levels of agricultural production and places the capital cycle within a local framework, resulting in great economic benefits.  He also pointed out that

Iraq has agricultural areas that cover the country's needs and achieve a surplus based on the country's capabilities, and thus agricultural production can be described as permanent oil.

Human development

Earlier, the economic affairs specialist, Muhammad Abdel Karim, stressed the interest in human development, the focus on raising the educational level, and the attention to infrastructure and services in the regions.
The countryside.

He pointed out that developing agricultural production requires implementing projects to stop the encroachment of sand and reduce desertification near residential areas, establishing specialized research and extension stations covering all regions, as well as providing scientific and applied guidance materials, continuously training farmers on modern methods for managing the production process, and encouraging the use of modern technologies.
