The Oil Ministry says it is conducting tests on a new network of export pipelines and a platform in the Gulf that will add 900,000 barrels a day to its export capacity.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Asem Jihad, said the new platform in the Gulf is one of three Iraq is constructing in anticipation of a substantial hike in oil output.
Iraq says the contracts it has signed with oil majors will help it increase output 6 million barrels a day in a few years.
Iraq’s ultimate target is to become one of the world’s top oil producers and the platforms in the Gulf as well as the new pipeline network in southern Iraq is geared towards meeting that goal.
“The tests of pipelines and other installations meant for exports are expected to be completed by the end of the month,” Jihad said.
“The pipelines are ready and we just need about two more weeks to complete our tests,” he added.
Iraq is believed to be the world’s third largest in proven oil reserves.
