BAGHDAD - Around $15m (17.5bn IQD) has been lost by financial mismanagement and corruption in the Presidency of the Republic, revealed the Integrity Commission yesterday.

The Iraqi Council of Representatives has submitted an administrative and financial corruption file regarding the Presidency of the Republic to the judiciary outlining the allegations.

The commission said that the money was lost by the Presidency miscalculating salaries using an old exchange rate of the dollar and, contrary to service and retirement laws, doubling the salaries of its employees.

Committee member from State of Law Coalition Hussein al-Asadi told AKnews that the file was submitted in order to hold responsible the negligent and return the money that was wasted over the past years.

"Since 2004 the staff in the Presidency of the Republic get their salaries in foreign currency (dollar), calculating its exchange rate by 1,500 IQD. But the exchange rate of the dollar is about 1,200 IQD."

"We have official documents that prove that the President issued an order to double the salaries of staff in the Presidency, and this is contrary to the law of service and retirement.

"Especially as the presidency includes about 1,500 employees, a large number, and this is a waste of the public's money."

Asadi earlier accused President Jalal Talabani of violating the constitution and hinted about filing a lawsuit against him in Federal Court because for preventing the ratification of death sentences issued by the judiciary.

This also raised the ire of the Kurdistan Blocs Coalition (KBC) which asked him of official apologize.

Asadi revealed to AKnews earlier the Integrity Commission determination to present administrative and financial corruption files from many state institutions through weekly press conferences.

The first will be cases from ministries of defense and justice.
