DUHOK, May 23 (AKnews) - The National Alliance (NA) did not discuss searching for a replacement for PM Nouri al-Maliki, said a leader in the State of Law Coalition today, adding that the majority of the parties in the NC support keeping Maliki in his post.
Haidar al-Abbadi, a leader of the Dawa Party, said: "There's a consensus between the SLC and the NA, except the Sadrist Movement, to support the presence of Maliki in his post."
Abbadi denied Iraqi media reports about his nomination as a substitute for Maliki.
According to media leaks, many names were presented to replace Maliki. Iraqiya List has expressed its readiness to support the national security adviser Faleh al-Fayyad, who belongs to the Reform Movement led former Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari.
The NA confirmed receiving a request signed by four political leaders to nominate a replacement for Maliki. The four leaders who signed the request were leader of the Sadrist Movement Muqtada al-Sadr, Kurdistan's President Massoud Barzani, Iraqiya List leader Ayad Allawi and speaker of the Iraqi parliament Osama al-Nujaifi.
Sadr, Barzani, Allawi, Nujaifi and Iraqi President Jalal Talabani met in Erbil on April 28 to write a letter outlining a number of political demands.
The letter was sent to Jaafari and gave PM Maliki 15 days to respond or else the leaders would withdraw confidence from his government. The deadline ended last week and Sadr denied on Friday receiving any response from the NC to the letter.
