Azerbaijan and Iraq have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to commence direct flights, Azerbaijan's TREND news agency reported secretary of the Iraqi embassy in Azerbaijan, Jassim Mohammed Ahmed, as saying.
"According to the memorandum, both parties considered operating direct flights between Azerbaijani cities of Baku,, Nakhchivan, Ganja and Gabala and the Iraqi cities of Baghdad, Najaf, Basra, and Arbil," Ahmed said.
It is expected that the first flight will be operating between the cities of Baku and Najaf.
According to Trend both sides also discussed the issue of simplification of freight traffic between the countries.
The memorandum was signed by Azerbaijan's deputy director of State Civil Aviation Administration, Fuad Guliyev and Iraq's director general of Civil Aviation Administration, Nasser Hussain Bandera, who was part of the Iraqi Civil Aviation Administration's delegation to Azerbaijan.
