India’s Reliance Globalcom, the underseas cable unit of Reliance Communications, has said it has launched a joint venture with the Iraqi Telecommunications and Post Company (ITPC) that substantially expands the country’s broadband and telecommunications links to the outside world.
By activating the Al-Faw Cable Landing Station (CLS), the venture will connect Iraq to countries in the Middle East, Asia, Europe and North America, reports Reuters.
The station has a design capacity of 680 Gbps with two routes, each connected to the Falcon undersea fiber-optic cable network owned by Reliance Globalcom, and will initially use 50 Gbps on each route to cater to existing market demand.
The project was the first cable network to land in Iraq, which has a population of 30 million people, less than 3 percent of whom are currently connected to the internet.
Reliance Globalcom Chief Operating Officer Rory Cole (pictured) said:
“We are delighted at achieving this historic milestone and being the first private service provider to activate submarine capacity in Iraq. Falcon offers seamless connectivity globally and will help connect Iraq to the rest of the world through the reach of our global network. This opens a new opportunity for multi-national companies around the world to have a better communication with Iraq and operate from this country.“
Iraq holds a pivotal geographical position in the region and could be an important communications bridge joining the Middle East with Europe and Asia.
