Kuwait port delegation to make report
Baghdad, Aug.18 (AKnews) - The delegation that headed to Kuwait to prepare a detailed report about the plans for a controversial port is scheduled to return to Baghdad today to submit its report to the cabinet.
Iraq sent a delegation of technical experts at the beginning of this week to prepare a detailed report about Mubarak port and its negative effects on Iraqi sea faring and docking. Kuwait welcomed the delegation after tensions rose over the gulf states plans to build the mega port so close to Iraq’s narrow sea access.
The legal adviser to the Prime Minister Fadel Mohammed Jawad said: "The Technical Committee will return with a detailed report about the port that will be submitted later to the cabinet for consideration."
Iraq announced its intention to build a major new port - al-Faw - in 2005, but the project has stalled. Kuwait, taking advantage of the failure to make any progress announced the construction its own port just a few kilometers away from the al-Faw site.
Historic tensions have flared as a result of the move and Hezbollah Iraq has threatened to bomb the port if its construction goes ahead.
