Baghdad, Sept. (AKnews) -**** A report by a technical Iraqi committee sent to Kuwait in July***** states that Iraq's plans of a port in the gulf***** will not be affected by the Kuwaiti port under construction***** that has stirred disputes between the two neighbors.*****
Kuwait's Mubarak port next to Iraq's only deep water port of Umm Qasr raised concerns of the Iraqi politicians over the past two months as Iraqi economists said the port will steal 60% of Iraq's sea business.
*****An adviser to the Iraqi government Abdulhussein a;-Jabiri *****told AKnews Saturday that the technical report, *****issued Saturday, has assured the Iraqi government that the Mubarak port***** will not affect the establishment of Iraq's plans to construct the Faw port. *****
Iraq announced plans to build the Faw port in 2005 and some Iraqi politicians say Kuwait's Mubarak port was announced after Iraq disclosed its plans.
"The Iraqi government will not stop the construction of the Faw port and it is working to provide the necessary funds in addition to involving international companies to invest in it." al-Jabiri told AKnews.
Iraq laid the foundation stone for the Faw port in April 2010, a year before the declaration of Kuwait building Mubarak port. The Iraqi port, however, remained unimplemented due to shortcoming in funds.
The port is expected to cost US$4.6 billion with a capacity of 99 million tonnes per year.
