Iraqi army takes full control on Baiji Oil Refinery
On Saturday, security sources said that the Iraqi army has managed to seize full control of the Baiji refinery, following deadly clashes with ISIL terrorists.
The Iraqi army, in an operation, advanced toward the center of the Baiji city, north of Salah ad-Din province, and could retake the complex which is the country’s biggest oil refinery located about 200 km (130 miles) north of the capital Baghdad.
Dozens of militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group were reportedly killed during the operation. Security forces hoisted the Iraqi flag above the new building of the Baiji municipality, a source at the Salah ad-Din Police Department said.
Most of the ISIL militants fled to Iraq's northwestern province of Nineveh, he added. Iraqi security forces also managed to seize 15 fuel tankers from ISIL terrorists.
The ISIL militants made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer, after capturing large swaths of northern Syria. They have been committing heinous crimes in the areas they have taken, including the mass execution of civilians as well as Iraqi army troops and officers.
Mosul, which is Iraq's second largest city, has also been captured during militants’ rapid advances across the country.
