PARIS, Dec 1 (KUNA) -- Total Oil Company of France announced Monday a new oil and gas discovery in northern Iraq, with a test flow rate of 6,100 barrels per day of light oil and 10-15 million cubic feet of gas per day, a company statement said here.
The discovery, called Jisik-1, is on the Harir block about 60 kilometres from Erbil in the Kurdish region of Iraq.
Total said it drilled to just over 4,500 metres on Jisik and it is the second discovery on this block. In October 2013, Total struck oil with the Mirawa-1 discovery well in the same area.
With the latest find, Total said that it was continuing appraisal work and the recent successes in the area would "allow us to indentify operations for development." The French company has a 35 percent share on the Harir Block, alongside Marathon Oil, which has 45 percent and is the operator, and the Kurdish Regional Government, which has a 20 percent stake.
Total also has 20 percent and 22.5 percent on the Halfaya field and the Taza block, respectively, and it also holds 80 percent and is operator on the Safen and Baranan blocks in the Iraqi-Kurd region. (end) jk.mt
