World Bank: Iraqi situation getting worse

World Bank Group in yesterday's report confirmed that the growth of oil revenues and the economy in Iraq, coupled with declining violence for the period between 2007 and 2012, did not reduce poverty in the country.
She stressed that the Iraqi situation is getting worse, especially the most vulnerable in the current crisis. It stipulated establishing and maintaining peace and security to improve the economic growth and well-being.
He stressed the report, which was published on the Bank's website entitled «promises that have not achieved the oil and Growth: poverty, containment and welfare in Iraq, 2007-2012», the need to maintain economic growth and management of oil revenues and diversification of the economy for the benefit of activities led by the private sector and non-oil sector, in order to create a favorable climate for business, investment and job creation will intensify needed in the future.
The report recommended the application of a series of policies and priority actions in order to promote the welfare of the Iraqi people, which constitutes the first in-depth analysis of economic and social development in Iraq since 2006-2007, a period marked by the recovery in the oil sector, high oil revenues increased significantly.
The report concluded that in 2012, lived 20% of Iraq's population below the poverty line, and a large proportion of the Iraqi people likely to fall into poverty.
Although the country experienced high economic growth rate of 7% per year on average between 2008 and 2012, the poverty rate has not decreased by only 4 percentage points in that period, and reaped the most affluent segments of the population the largest percentage gains.
Said Robert quality PU Regional Director of the World Bank in Iraq, said that «the report includes a critical analysis of the relationship between the growth of what has been achieved in the past and the reduction of poverty in Iraq.
The report indicated that the formation of an elected civilian government in 2005-2006 was followed by a period of strong economic growth, however, poverty has not declined, but only slightly, and continued forms of severe deprivation in the dimensions of non-cash.
He pointed out that nearly half of the population in Iraq, hold a teaching less than the primary level, and nearly one-third of children aged between zero and five years suffer stunted, and more than 90% of households in Baghdad and central and southern provinces get electricity for less than 8 hours per day, and a third of men and 90% of women in the age group 15-64 years are not working nor looking for work, comes more than 60% of the calories consumed by the poor of the program to support the food at the national level, which reflects the hard legacy of violence and institutional fragility and vulnerability in Iraq. »
