Japan Continues to Assist KRG

Minister Falah Mustafa, Head of KRG Department of Foreign Relations today received Mr. Kentaro Sonoura, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan and his accompanying delegation to discuss latest developments and bilateral ties.
Minister Mustafa briefed the Vice-Minister on the military, humanitarian, and economic challenges facing the Kurdistan Region as well as the political process in Iraq.
Highlighting Japan’s humanitarian assistance to the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, Minister Mustafa stated, “The Kurdistan Regional Government very much appreciates the generosity of the Government of Japan in providing humanitarian aid for the displaced people in Iraq and all of its humanitarian efforts since the beginning of the crisis. The Government of Japan has played a crucial role in alleviating the suffering of the internally displaced people affected by the recent security crisis in Iraq.”
The Minister added, “The Kurdistan Region, with the help of our friends in international community, is committed to continue the fight against the terrorists of ISIS and to continue providing humanitarian relief for over 1.5 million refugees and IDPs who have taken refuge in our region.”
Referring to the commitment of the Kurdistan Region to strengthen ties with Japan, Minister Mustafa stressed, “KRG pursues an open door policy in building bridges with members of international community. We hope to see a consulate general of the government of Japan be opened in Kurdistan in order to further strengthen political, economic, cultural as well as educational ties between both sides.”
Vice-Minister Sonoura highly praised the humanitarian response of the Kurdistan Region and the role of the Peshmerga forces. He said, “I express my deepest respect and appreciation for the bravery and sacrifices of the Pshmergas in the fight against ISIS.”
The Vice-Minister reiterated the commitment of the government of Japan to further strengthen ties with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and to continue providing humanitarian assistance. He also expressed Japan’s unwavering support for stability in the region.
Both sides also discussed potential areas of bilateral cooperation and agreed to conduct regular meetings in order to increase the level of economic, cultural, and political exchanges between both sides.
The meeting was attended by Mr. Karwan Jamal, Deputy Head of DFR, Mr. Kansuke Nagaoka, Charge d’Affaires ad interim of Japan to Iraq as well as several other officials from both sides.
