Abadi’s visit was to include Peshmerga in Mosul operation: analyst
4/8/2015
A political analyst in Kurdistan Region stated the Monday visit of the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to the Kurdish region was to convince the Kurdish forces of Peshmerga to participate in the upcoming operation to liberate the northern city of Mosul that is under the control of the Islamic State (IS) since last June. Accompanied by Iraqi Defense Minister Khaled al-Obaidi, Abadi arrived in Erbil on Monday and met the region’s President Massoud Barzani. The analyst Massoud Abdulkhalegh told Kurdpress that in the wake of Tekrit liberation and the recent developments in Iraq, Abadi’s visit to the autonomous Kurdish region was not to settle differences between Baghdad and Erbil, the capital of the Kurdish region, but there were military goals behind the visit. He added the visit was to convince the Kurdish forces to participate in liberating Mosul and other parts of Nainawa province. The analyst went on to say that such visits should focus on Iraq fundamental problems and making a federal system in the state as well as respecting the rights of Sunni Muslims and other crises in the state. He further blamed the Kurdish officials’ reactions to the central government as naïve Barzani did not personally welcome UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in the UN head’s visit to the region but he welcomes Abadi in person “although the move can ease tensions and help solving problems and reaching agreements.
