Iraqi PM statement is to please Shiite public and put pressure on Kurdistan: MP BAGHDAD,— A Kurdish member of the Iraqi Parliament has rejected Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s claim that Baghdad has honoured all Kurdish salaries since last November.
MP Sarhan Ahmed told Basnews that the Iraqi PM’s statement was made to please the Shiite public and put pressure on the Kurdistan Region.
Speaking to an Iraqi news channel on Sunday, Abadi claimed that the Iraqi central government has been sending the full balance of Kurdish government employees’ salaries since November, and doesn’t know why the Kurdistan Regional Government KRG hasn’t distributed the money.
“I’m shocked that the KRG wants to put pressure on us [Baghdad government]. If Erbil doesn’t provide the amount of oil we have agreed on, they won’t receive the full complement of the budget,” warned Abadi.
However, the Kurdish MP in Baghdad said that the Abadi claims are baseless as Iraqi oil minister Adil Abdul Mahdi recently confirmed in the Iraqi parliament that the KRG has honoured its agreement with Baghdad.
“Abadi’s claims are only to please Shiites, and its just to put the pressure back on the KRG,” added Ahmed.
The Kurdish MP says Abadi’s current position is weak and the Shi’ite blocs are putting pressure on him to stand up to the Kurds. Hence he’s accusing the KRG of violating the agreement.
The Iraqi central government has cut Kurdish employees’ salaries since February last year, citing issues with Kurdistan’s oil exports.
Under the Baghdad-Erbil oil revenue-sharing agreement, the KRG is to pump and send 300,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) from the Kirkuk fields to the State Organization for Marketing of Oil (SOMO), as well as an additional 250,000 bpd via the Ceyhan Pipeline.
In return, the KRG was promised 17 percent of the national fiscal budget, guaranteeing payments that were ceased in 2014 after Erbil sought to export oil independently
