Iraqi MP: Prosecute Al-Maliki at the ICC

A Kurdish Iraqi lawmaker yesterday demanded the country's former prime minister and current vice president Nouri Al-Maliki be prosecuted at the International Criminal Court over what he called his "responsibility for the loss of the city of Mosul to the Islamic State (ISIS) last summer".
In remarks to the Anadolu Agency, Adel Nouri of the Kurdistan Islamic Union party said Al-Maliki "is primarily responsible for the fall of Mosul, however the courts in Iraq will not be impartial and therefore we call to prosecute him at the International Criminal Court in The Hague."
Adel, who is a member of a parliamentary committee which is investigating the fall of Mosul, said the former Iraqi ground forces commander, General Ali Ghaidan, in his testimony before the committee held Al-Maliki responsible for the fall of Mosul into ISIS's hands.
He said that in his statement, Ghaidan said the Iraqi army commanders received orders from the Prime Minister and Commander of the Armed Forces at the time Nouri Al-Maliki to withdraw from Mosul during ISIS's attack on the city in June 2014, which led to the loss of the entire city.
The MP pointed out that the Kurdish political parties have submitted a proposal to the Kurdish regional president to open an investigation into Al-Maliki's actions at the ICC.
Last November, the Iraqi parliament formed a committee to investigate the fall of Mosul.
