UNESCO: Deliberate destruction of Syrian, Iraqi ruins reached unprecedented levels

London, SANA- Director General of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Irina Bokova said on Thursday that the deliberate looting, destruction of the Syrian and Iraq historical sites have reached unprecedented levels in the contemporary history.
“Terrorists of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, ISIS, loot the ruins and sell them to traffickers to collect money,” Bokova said at a meeting for antiquities’ experts in London.
Reuters quoted Bokova as saying that one fifth of the historical sites among 10 thousand official and known sites worldwide came under the control of ISIS who looted them.
She added that the Syrian historical sites were also looted to a great deal, expressing the international organization’s concern over Libya ruins too.
