Al-Jarallah lauds Kuwait-Iraq ties as close, sisterly
By Ali Al-Herz KUWAIT, June 2 (KUNA) -- Undersecretary of Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs Khaled Al-Jarallah said Thursday evening the relations with Iraq are "close, sisterly and mutually beneficial." "We are fully confident that the brothers in Iraq are as keen as us on further enhancing the bilateral ties," he told KUNA here.
"Though not official, some voices in Iraq seek to mar the neighborly ties," he said, voicing hope that such unfriendly remarks would refrain from touching "the essence of the relationship." Al-Jarallah made the remarks on the sidelines of a reception held by Italy Embassy in Kuwait to mark the 150th anniversary of the Italian unification.
"The Iraqi government officials are sensible and responsible in their remarks but unfriendly statements appear from time to time in Iraqi press and parliament," he explained.
Asked about the dispute between Kuwait Airways Corp. (KAC) and its Iraqi peer, Al-Jarallah said: "This is a commercial subject that was referred to courts. The two corporations are able to settle the issue once and for all through enforcement of the relevant court rulings." Commenting on the recent meeting of the Kuwaiti-Iraqi joint commission on the issue of Mubarak Al-Kabir Harbor on Boubyan Island, he said: "The free navigation in Khor Abdullah can serve the interests of both sides. We are committed to cooperation with Iraq for shouldering this shared responsibility pursuant to the UN Security Council Resolution 833." The State of Kuwait always advocates for strict implementation of the provisions of the resolution which is in the interest of both sides, he went on to say.
During their visit to Kuwait, the Iraqi delegation was apprised on the technical details of the harbor.
"The concerns of Iraq over the harbor were totally removed after the talks of the delegation with us," he said, citing the remarks of Iraq Ambassador to Kuwait Mohammad Bahr Al-Oloum after the visit.
