The radical group of Islamic State (IS/ISIS) has executed more than 90 of its militants on charges of escaping the battlefield, activists in the northeastern Syrian city of Shaddadi reported on Tuesday.
The IS-linked Sharia Council in Shaddadi city, south of Hasakah, sentenced the militants who withdrew from their fighting positions without a permission from their command to death, considering their retreat as “an act of treason”.
Dozens of IS militants have forcibly withdrawn from areas in Hasakah and Tel Abyad, north Syria, after fierce clashes with Kurdish forces and amid constant strikes by the U.S.-led coalition.
“Daesh (IS) shot more than 90 of its militants dead. The execution took place in front of hundreds of people including the group’s militants and residents of Shaddadi on Monday evening,” an eyewitness told ARA News (on the condition of anonymity).
The source added that the militants’ dead bodies were subsequently buried in the Massawel district on the outskirts of Shaddadi city.
Speaking to ARA News, Abu Zainab al-Hashimi, a former IS fighter in Shaddadi, said that the majority of the executed militants were from foreign nationalities.
Based on private sources in Shaddadi, al-Hashimi reported that the execution took place in the Massakin square in central Shaddadi.
“The decision was made by the Sharia Council to execute everyone who evacuated his fighting position in Hasakah. The group blamed those militants for the recent defeat before the Kurdish forces in Hasakah city,” al-Hashimi told ARA News.
