A spokesman for the US Department of Defense, said the Pentagon, said that the rescue of American hostages in northern Iraq on Wednesday night began "after receiving information that the hostages are facing imminent execution collectively," at the hands of the organization of the Islamic State fighters.
The spokesman Peter Cook said in a statement that it had been five members of the organization arrested and killed "a number" in another operation that freed about 70 hostages, including more than 20 of the Iraqi security forces. The statement said the soldier was killed.
