BAGHDAD: Attacks killed five American soldiers and 16 Iraqis yesterday, the deadliest day for US forces in Iraq in more than two years, just months before all of them must withdraw.

''Five US service members were killed Monday in central Iraq,'' said a brief US Army statement.
