BAGHDAD, Nov. 17 (AKnews) - The Security and Defense Committee in the Council of Representatives claimed that it agreed with the federal government to stop all investigations against officers in the Ministries of Defense and Interior under the Accountability and Justice Law.
Under this law, members of the Baath Party of late former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and former high-ranking officials of the times before 2003 are not allowed to get employed in government and state bodies. Investigations are carried out by the Supreme National Commission for Accountability and Justice and supervised by the Council's Accountability and Justice Committee.
Security Committee member Abbas al-Bayati said that the officers haven proven their efficiency in the ministries.
The Accountability and Justice Commission has not yet commented on that announcement.
Recently, Iraqi authorities arrested more than 600 mostly Sunni citizens who were suspected of being Baath members, plotting a coup d'etat. The arrest caused tensions between Sunni politicians and the predominantly Shiite government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. The Sunni provinces Salahaddin and Anbar threatened to proclaim autonomy.
