Baghdad, Nov. 17 (AKnews) - The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity said electricity bills are subsidized by the Government, indicating that citizens pay about 20% of their bill's true price.
The provision of continuous power in Iraq is one of the biggest challenges facing successive governments since 2003, despite the disbursement of $27 billion USD (32,000 billion IQD) by the ministry during the past eight years, according to the Ministry of Finance.
Ministry spokesman Musab al-Mudarres told AKnews that the Ministry of Electricity is an executive body and there are instructions from the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers about subsidizing utility bills to reduce the burdens on citizens in the current situation.
Iraqis depend on generators to address the continuing electricity deficit that reaches up to 18 hours a day. Iraq needs at least 14,000MW to meet the high demand for energy, while it only produces 7,000MW.
