Erbil, June 9 (AKnews) – Hussein al-Azri, the former director of the Commercial Bank of Iraq who fled to Lebanon, denied allegations of corruption against him.
Azri is accused of corruption after the Integrity Commission and the monetary audit council revealed that Azri had granted loans without any guarantees, thus causing the lost of millions of U.S. dollars.
“These allegations are unsubstantiated, are entirely without foundation and will be challenged vigorously through all possible legal and political channels”, Azri said in a statement that was released by his office.
Azri expressed his belief that some people personally benefit from these allegations and announced to defend himself.
Azri said he asked “the Government of Iraq to appoint a leading, international independent auditor to examine the allegations”. He said he would be willing to cooperate.
Lebanon and Iraq started negotiations earlier this week to hand over Azri to Iraqi authorities.
The Ministry of Finance announced Sunday that Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki appointed Hamdiya al-Jaff as new director of the Commercial Bank. Some believe, Maliki profits from the accusations against Azri.
Azri is the nephew of Ahmad Shalabi, a member of parliament who was recently dismissed as president of the Justice and Accountability Commission (JAC) by Maliki.
Maliki also fought against Shalabi, when he ordered the Iraqi Coast Guard to stop a boat that was carrying aid to protesters in Bahrain. 80 well-known Iraqi figures, including journalists, doctors and activists were also on board the controversial vessel, which was organized by Shalabi.
