GE announced the opening of three new offices in Iraq - Baghdad, Basra and Erbil - further exemplifying the company’s 40 year history and commitment to the country. This will drive the company’s long-term operations led by a focus on localization, knowledge transfer and partnerships with public and private sector leaders across all key growth industries.
Today’s event was held in partnership with the National Investment Commission (NIC) and under the patronage of the Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister His Excellency Dr Saleh Al-Mutlaq.
Over the past years, GE has played a pivotal role in supporting the country’s infrastructure needs by providing advanced technologies and solutions. Today, GE’s on-the-ground presence will allow the company to be a true partner in realizing Iraq’s socio-economic development goals.
Currently, GE is delivering power generation technology, which when installed, is capable of generating over nine gigawatts of electricity to the country; GE is also providing modern diagnostic technologies to a number of hospitals. GE’s engines power a significant fleet of Iraqi Airways, while its energy solutions drive the efficiencies of oilfields. The company is also promoting the skills of its Iraqi workforce by providing extensive training programs and through knowledge sharing initiatives.
To mark the opening of the Baghdad office, GE and NIC hosted a panel discussion on ‘Public Private Partnerships Paving the Way for Sustainable Growth.’ Salar Amin, Vice Chairman, Iraqi National Investment Commission; Ziad Bader, Iraq Country Manager International Finance Corporation; Anwar Buni, Director General - Sector Planning Division for Ministry of Planning; Simona Marinescu, UNDP; and John Rice, GE’s Vice Chairman and President & CEO of GE’s Global Growth and Operations, participated in the discussion attended by dignitaries, government officials and GE representatives.
The government and industry leaders discussed the growth potential of Iraq, the key drivers that will sustain the country’s economic and social development, the challenges in sustaining the growth momentum, the investment climate of the country and the significant contribution that the private sector can play in sectors as varied as energy, oil & gas, power, water, aviation, transportation, finance and healthcare.
John Rice, GE’s Vice Chairman, said: “GE is committed to partnering with Iraq in meeting and driving its developmental goals. The opening of three new offices in the country, where we have a history of over 40 years of operation, complements the Iraqi government’s strategic development plan to make a meaningful improvement in the lives of the Iraqis. In all our areas of operation – from energy to healthcare, oil & gas, healthcare and aviation – we have emphasized on bringing cutting edge technologies, the result of our sustained focus on innovation and R&D.
“We will support the country’s economic diversification and partner in infrastructure development through public and private partnerships. We believe that building skills and transferring our knowledge base are extremely important in building long-term partnerships.”
Dr Sami R Al-Araji, Chairman of Iraqi National Investment Commission, said: “The key objective of the National Investment Commission of Iraq is to accelerate the rebuilding of the Iraqi economy and ensure its sustained growth by attracting regional and foreign capital which will facilitate knowledge transfer and advanced technology deployment across all economic sectors.
“GE’s commitment to opening new offices and hiring Iraqi staff complement our vision for the country. Public private partnerships that support infrastructure projects and improve the lives of the people are an important catalyst for development, and we are optimistic that the growth potential offered by Iraq will appeal to investors from around the world.”
GE’s vision of public private partnerships in Iraq is where the private entity will be significantly involved in supporting the financial, technical and operational aspects involved in the design, finance, building and operation of projects across all growth sectors.
Over the years, GE has also partnered with several local entities to support the country’s development. The businesses that comprise GE Energy—Power & Water, Energy Management and Oil & Gas—work together to serve the country’s energy sector, regarded as the backbone of the economy, by providing advanced technology and service solutions. These cover all areas of the industry including oil, natural gas, water, renewable resources such as solar and wind, as well as grid modernization technologies to meet 21st century energy needs.
According to governmental estimates, peak demand for electricity in Iraq, excluding the Kurdistan region, will rise to 12,500 MW, and the Ministry of Electricity is taking concerted efforts to increase the country’s power generation capacity more than four-fold in the next four years to meet the growing demand. GE supports the country’s power sector, having already installed more than 130 gas turbines that help meet the electricity demand.
GE has also signed a historic agreement to deliver 56 new heavy-duty frame 9E gas turbines capable of supplying 7,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity. Another eight GE turbines are being installed in Baghdad, which will add over 650 megawatts to support the electricity needs of greater Baghdad.
With over 143 billion barrels of proven reserves – the third largest in the world – Iraq is investing in its oil & gas and energy infrastructure with a focus on enhancing operational efficiencies. GE gas turbines have a strong presence on Iraq’s oilfields due to their reliability and ability to use different fuels. The company’s wide portfolio of technology solutions, including motors and compressor stations, is deployed to compress flared gases at West Qurna, Zubair and Rumaila oilfields.
GE is providing advanced operational training and talent development programs for Iraqis. The company’s acclaimed Oil & Gas University has imparted advanced training for over 100 Iraqi Ministry of Oil employees. To further empower Iraqi youth, GE plans to introduce its Graduate Management Program (GMP) in Iraq. To date, GE has trained over 300 Iraqis in technical and managerial skills.
Iraq requires a total of 66.85 billion cubic metres of water by 2015 according to the Ministry of Water Resources to cover the needs of agriculture, marshland maintenance, civil use, industry applications and power generation. Working closely with Iraq’s oil & gas, power, petrochemical, refinery and municipal customers, GE’s water business employs various water treatment solutions - including oil & gas flow assurance and asset integrity, fuel oil and cooling tower treatment, desalination and mobile water, and advanced wastewater treatment – to maintain the performance of power generation equipment at several Iraqi power plants, including Baghdad South.
According to the National Investment Commission’s healthcare sector investment policy, Iraq is exploring partnerships to promote private sector involvement in healthcare facilities and in attracting modern healthcare providers to set up advanced systems. GE is an active partner in boosting the healthcare infrastructure of the country, and today is the number one provider of advanced diagnostic technologies that help in the early diagnosis of life-threatening diseases. GE is also rolling out its healthymagination commitment in Iraq aimed at increasing access to high quality healthcare at lower costs.
In other key infrastructure development partnerships, GE’s engines power a large fleet of Iraqi Airways, contributing to the country’s aviation sector growth. This complements the massive airport and aviation infrastructure development plans currently ongoing in the country with extensive renovation at the Baghdad International Airport that is expected to bring in investments of over US$2 billion.
