Maliki announces Iraq’s readiness to host Syrian opposition

Baghdad (NINA) – Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki expressed Iraq’s readiness to host Syrian opposition groups toward reaching a solutoin that fulfills the Syrian peoples’ demands away from violence and civil war.
A statement issued on Saturday, Dec. 3, by the Prime Minister’s Office quoted Maliki during an interview on Saturday with the Associated Press that will be televised later, saying “Iraq supports dialogue and peaceful means to achieve required changes.”
Maliki added, “Supporting peoples should not be through sanctions or force, but through understanding and dialogue, we support people seeking democracy and genuine participation on the government, through free democratic election.”
He expressed that the era of rule by one party or one sect or one man is over.
Maliki said that, “Iraq has suffered much from sanctions, therefor we do not support imposing it on any country, not just Syria, because sanctions harm the people and leaves deep scars on them.”
As for security situation after the withdrawal of American forces, Maliki said that there is not worry of security deteriotation because since 2008 the security portfolio has been run by Iraqi forces, and there is no worry that sectarian strife might erupt. He expressed optimism that Iraq will become the region’s heart, politically, economically and socially; it will cooperate with the region’s countries for its stability and prosperity.
Maliki stressed on Iraq’s independent decision, asserting that Iraq’s interests are who dictate it policies, he said, “We will not be with the Americans against Iran or with the Iranians against America, we will act according to our interests.” / End.
