Dohuk, June 11 (AKnews) – War compensations to the U.S. are absolutely legitimate, said Najeeba Najib, Member of Parliament and member of the Finance Committee, today.
Najib commented on US Congressman Dana Rohrabacher who said yesterday Iraq should consider “repaying the United States some of the mega-dollars that we have spent here in the last eight years”.
Najib said this would legitimate according to an agreement between the U.S. and Iraq.
“We don’t have any choice but paying compensation to several parties”, Najib said.
AKnews was unable to find such a document about reparations between the U.S. and Iraq.
However, Rohrabacher proposed a bill as annex to the 2008 “U.S.-Iraq Strategic Framework and Status of Forces Agreement” (SFA and SOFA) in April 2008, demanding that “Iraq agrees to reimburse the United States for all costs incurred by the United States related to the presence of United States Armed Forces in Iraq after the effective date of the agreement, including the costs of pay and allowances for members of the United States Armed Forces serving in Iraq.” The bill was not voted on.
SFA and SOFA rule the relations between Iraq and the U.S. in the future and set a time-table for the withdrawal of U.S. troops. According to SOFA, the last U.S. soldier has to leave by December 31st, 2011.
