Maliki: U.S. support for Iraq is necessary in the next phase
Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said he was confident of the ability of Iraqi security forces to take over the reins after the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the country's year-end.
Maliki said in an editorial published in the Washington Post on Monday that U.S. support for Iraq in the areas of security and defense, investment and education will be necessary in the next phase, especially since the country is still facing some difficulties that hinder the movement of progress.
The prime minister pointed out that there are still forces seeking to spread destruction in the country, led by the outlawed Baath Party, who said that the elements they wanted derail the political process in the country.
Maliki said that his government is seeking to establish the principles of democracy in the country although there are challenges related to the political process and the constitution and powers of the provinces.
